January 31, 2008

Wa'a Repair

10 am-3pm @ HCC

The Hui will be completing some minor cosmetic repairs on both Kai Lana Kaleo and the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku wa'a prior to relocating the wa'a back to the GSL Marina in early March.

"Save the Center" Kanikapila Night
6- 9:30 pm @ HCC
Cost: $5.00 per person-dinner included
Proceeds from this Kanikapila will help sustain our efforts to keep the doors of our Hawaiian Cultural Center open here in Utah. If you were not aware, the Ka Lama Mohala Foundation operates the Hawaiian Cultural Center on 100% grant funding with the purpose of being the hub of Hawaiian knowledge and education here in Utah. The Center provides Hawaiians and Hawaiians-at-heart with a sense of place, belonging, and identity that keeps us all filled with the spirit of ALOHA. Please plan on attending this special Kanikapila where you will learn more about our efforts to creating a sustainable Hawaiian Cultural Center in Utah. All donations are tax deductible. Marina Entrance Fee Required: $3.00 per vehicle
Come support the Hui as several of our Members will attempt a Winter Paddle on the Great Salt Lake, in hopes of also creating awareness of our Hawaiian Cultural Center. Dress for the weather and bring your cameras!

First Annual Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Great Salt Lake Water Fest
10 am-4 pm @ GSL South Marina
Marina Entrance Fee Required: $3.00 per vehicle
This inaugural event will be the first of its kind in Utah and will be a historical event for all Hawaiians and Hawaiians-at-heart. This Water Fest will showcase Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Racing (OC6) demonstrations in real racing format on the shores of the Great Salt Lake South Marina. Paddlers from the Pacific Northwest Outrigger Canoe Association as well as paddlers from our own Hui Paoakalani will assist in this demonstration event. If you are interested in participating as a novice paddler, helping with the event, or providing any type of sponsorship for this event-please e-mail Darren at hui_paoakalani@live.com . More information will be forthcoming regarding participation fee's and practice schedules.

Happy New Year Everyone!
We hope you all had a safe and fun celebration.
This year is sure to be an AWESOME year for the Hui.
Our next Hui Meeting/Clinic will be on January 7, 2009 at 6:30 pm. We will be discussing upcoming activities. Please mark your calendar.
Hui Paoakalani expresses our deepest sympathy to the Moana Flores and 'Ohana as Moana's father "Pops" passed away Christmas morning here in Salt Lake City. Funeral Services will be held back in Hawaii on January 9th. Please keep Moana and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
