Aloha Hui Paoakalani Members and Friends,

We  have had a late start to our paddling season because of availability issues with our Hui members.  Earlier this spring we have met and worked on the maintenance of our equipment and canoes.  However, we have not had time to launch any of the canoes due to uncertainties with the marina dredging, hurricane like wind conditions at the marina, bad weather and other family commitments.  However, we are launching one of our canoes this coming Memorial Day weekend, specifically, Saturday, May 28th.  Hopefully, this will allow us to start a regular paddling schedule in June and continue throughout the summer months.

Therefore, if you are available, please join Uncles Butch, Ben and Kwan Ki this Saturday to haul, rig and secure one of the canoes at 10 am on Saturday, May 28th.  We plan to have a potluck luncheon sometime around 1 pm.  Please bring some of your favorites.  We plan to barbecue some char siu pork ribs and anything else you want to bring.  If you have any questions, please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026.  Mahalo,  Ben

Celebration for Gene Chun

Some of Gene's Delta Airlines Friends have organized a memorial celebrating Gene's life. All are invited to attend. *Hui Paoakalani will host a memorial for our friend Gene Chun once the weather warms up and we can get the wa'a in the water this spring.

Aloha Gene Chun

Hui Paoakalani is saddened by the loss of one of our finest founding board members
and dear friend Gene Chun. Gene will always be remembered for the way he shared the Aloha spirit with anyone who came out to the Great Salt Lake marina. Gene was a great paddler, and a dedicated member of our Hui. His service and kindness to each one of us and our Hawaiian community will be dearly missed but never forgotten. He took time to instruct our keiki and usually the last one to leave the lake when it was time to go home. Gene always made us laugh with his stories about his travels around the world. He also kept us well fed with our favorite donuts and Chow fun from Little World. It has been a privilege to be touched by the life, friendship and service of this remarkable man! “hut, hut, HO!” until we meet again! ~Hui Paoakalani click here to view a video tribute to our friend Gene Chun.

Aloha Hui and Friends: We will have our last paddle of the 2015 season on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 10 am to 2 pm. We will also be dry docking the outrigger canoes this Saturday. If you want to paddle, please come at 10 am because we will probably take the first canoe out of the water in the morning and take the second canoe out after we paddle. We will also clean and wash the canoes prior to preparing them for winter storage. As usual, we will have a pot luck luncheon so bring your stuff to share with the Hui. Mahalo to all of those who came out during the summer paddling season to support Hui Paoakalani. If you have any questions please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026. Mahalo Nui, Ben, Darren, Uncle Butch and the Hui

Based on the latest weather forecasts, Uncle Butch and I decided to cancel paddling for this coming Saturday, September 5, 2015. Also, based on the latest information, Nebraska might be a bad place for BYU to open the 2015 College Football season. Hopefully, Utah does well tonight, Thursday September 3rd, and beats Michigan. So stay home this weekend and watch your favorite football teams or just any football game(s) you have time to watch. Make your favorite ono barbecue and eat up. And Gene, have a cold one. Or two. Or whatever you can handle. I have a 12 pack of Diet Coke for the weekend.
