MAHALO FOR ANOTHER GREAT PADDLING SEASON!

Aloha Hui Family & Friends,

Mahalo for making Hui Paoakalani's 2017 paddling season a very successful one! Our paddling season is officially all pau!!! The Hui will still be needing some help to pull both wa'a out of the H20 at a later date (in October) and help with loading our sailing wa'a (Kai Lana Kaleo) on our trailer and relocating her to our dry dock at the Medeiros Hale in Centerville for maintenance and fiberglass work. We hope to re-launch Kai Lana Kaleo for sailing in the Spring of 2018. Further updates to follow.

SATURDAY PADDLE - AUGUST 26, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends:

We will be paddling this Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 10 am to 2 pm.  We hope that you will be able to make it as the football season starts soon and the paddling season (and summer) is coming to it's end.  We have had a short paddling season with all of the work done dredging the marina, but the marina is finally looking like itself as the sailboats - yachts are back in the water.  We will benefit from all the work done in the marina in the future.  Come on out and have some fun to end the summer.

Current weather forecasts show temperatures in the low 90's with a mostly sunny sky and winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.  This usually means that we will have a great paddle and enjoyable time under the tree and pavilion.  Our menu for the potluck luncheon will be Auntie Becki's delicious clam chowder and famous cornbread.  Please bring your favorite dish or dessert to share with us.  As usual, if you have any questions, call me at 801-721-7026.

We will have our normal pot luck luncheon sometime after 12 Noon.  Our menu will be hotdogs and chili with Macaroni salad.  Please bring your favorite dish, salad or desert.  If you have any questions, please call me at 801-721-7026.

SATURDAY PADDLE - JULY 22, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends,

We will have a Saturday Paddle this Saturday, July 22, 2017 starting at 10 am - 2 pm.  Hopefully the dredging will be complete as they were still working on a few spots in the marina last Saturday.  We apologize for the inconveniences of dredging which has limited our paddling as the marina is sometimes blocked by the dredging barge.   However, the benefits of this project will be long term as the marina will be better maintained and usage will be increased overall.

We will have a potluck luncheon as usual.  Again, weather projections show another hot Utah summer day with temperatures in the mid 90 to 100 degrees and 10 - 15 mph winds.  If you have any questions, please call me at 801-721-7026.

SATURDAY PADDLE - JULY 15, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends,

We will be paddling this Saturday, July 15, 2017.  Kumu Kaleo and Ohana will be visiting Utah and will join us this Saturday.  Kumu wants to practice Malama Honua while at the GSL Marina so we have planned a small service project to clean up the area surrounding our canoe storage area.  We will clean  up, pick up trash, pull weeds and make our earth a better place.  Please bring a few tools and this should take no longer than 20 - 30 minutes.  Therefore, we will start our activities at 9 am and finish up around 2 pm or sometime after that.  Most times we don't leave till after 3 pm.

We will have our normal pot luck luncheon sometime after 12 Noon.  Again, it will be a hot day as temperatures should be around 100 degrees.  Last Saturday was definitely one of our hottest paddle days.  Bring protective gear, sun screen, water, gatorade, and anything else to ensure a safe and enjoyable paddle.  If you have questions, please call me at 801-721-7026.

HUI PADDLE - SATURDAY, JULY 8, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends,

We will be paddling this Saturday, July 8, 2017 from 10 am to 2 pm.  We also plan to rig and launch the Melinda Lei Hanohano this Saturday.  The Great Salt Lake Marina is almost back to normal as the dredging has been completed and the docks have been reassembled for the most part.  There is probably still some work to do on the docks but we are ready to resume our normal paddling.  You are all invited to join us.

We will also have our normal pot luck luncheon and our menu for this week is hamburger steak, rice, and potato macaroni salad.  We are also planning to make some shave ice.  Please bring your favorite dish or dessert.  Mahalo to everyone who helped with the maintenance of our canoes over the past 3 months.  We still have some work to do on the Kailana Kaleo, our sailing canoe, over the next several months.  If you have any questions, call me at 801-721-7026.

CANOE MAINTENANCE - SATURDAY, JULY 1, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends,

Our July 4th Weekend plans DO NOT include paddling on Saturday, July 1, 2017.  Instead, we will be meeting at the Great Salt Lake Marina on Saturday to complete our maintenance work on our canoe, Melinda Lei Hanohano.   We want to complete the clear coating of Melinda and possibly rig and launch her in order to have her ready for our July activities during the coming weeks.  We plan to meet at our regular time at 10 am and work until we complete the maintenance.  We still plan to have a quick pot luck luncheon around 12 Noon.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day on July 4th.  Please drive safely and have fun with your family and friends.  Please call me at 801-721-7026 if you have any questions.

HUI PADDLE - SATURDAY, JUNE 24, 2017

Aloha Hui Members and Friends:

We will be paddling this Saturday, June 24, 2017 starting at 10 am to 2 pm.  We had a great time at the GSL Sailfest while Darren and Tammy were in Hawaii to welcome the Hokulea home from it's Journey around the World.  Maybe they will share some of their feelings and pictures of the Hokulea Homecoming celebration with us when they get back from Hawaii.

Our Potluck Luncheon will be sometime after 12 Noon.  We will be bringing Sweet & Sour Spareribs, Rice and Potato Salad this week.  Please bring your favorite dish or something along those lines to share with us or just bring some delicious dessert.  Again, if you have any questions, call Ben at 801-721-7026.

SATURDAY, JUNE 17, 2017: PADDLE & GSL YACHT CLUB SAILFEST

Aloha Hui Members & Friends,

This weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 16 - 18, 2017 is the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club's Annual Sailfest!!  The following link to their website provides details of the 2017 Sailfest: http://www.gslyc.org/

The Hui will be paddling on Saturday, June 17th, from 10 am to 2 pm.  Visitors should remember that there is an entry fee of $3 to the GSL Marina State Park.  The Hui will have a pot luck luncheon sometime after 12 Noon.  We are planning to have some Chili and Rice bowls but you are welcome to bring your favorite dish or dessert.  Expect the Marina to be a little busier than normal with Sailfest 2017 activities.

Regarding the dredging of the marina, Dave Shearer, Harbor Master, reports that there is still a lot of dredging to be done.  They are currently working on the mouth of the harbor in order to have it open and deep for Saturday and Sunday Sailfest activities.  They will begin to reassemble E and D docks but the docks may not be ready for use until mid July.  Also, earlier this past week the marina had wind gusts up to 90 mph and the marina was closed during that period.  Our canoes made it through the strong winds.

Please contact Ben Au at 801-721-7026 if you have any questions.

As usual, we will have a pot luck luncheon during the noon hour.  Current forecasts show temperatures in the mid 70's with partly cloudy - sunny day  and winds WNW  10 to 15 mph.  Water temperatures are nice this time of the year before warming up in July.

Call Ben at 801-721-7026 if you have questions.

HUI PAOAKALANI 2017 PADDLING SEASON

ALOHA HUI PAOAKALANI MEMBERS AND FRIENDS:

We will be meeting on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Great Salt Lake Marina from 10 am to 2 pm.   The purpose of this meeting is threefold:

1. Perform maintenance on Na Wa'a (our 3 canoes) in preparation to rigging and launching Na Wa'a at a later date - probably in June.

2.  Clean up our office and storage facilities, inventory, repair and maintain our paddles, personal floating devices, radios and other safety equipment.

3.  Discuss the current dredging status of the marina and its impact on our paddling schedule and discuss plans for the 2017 Paddling Season.  We will try to answer any questions you may have on any matters relevant to our canoe club.

Naturally, we are also planning to have a Hui style barbecue pot luck luncheon.  Please bring your favorite BBQ or island food.  If you have any questions about this meeting or the upcoming paddling season, please text me (Ben Au) at 8014-721-7026.

Mahalo,  Ben
