Aloha Everyone,
With the change in weather this past weekend our 2010 paddling season has officially come to a close. Our Wa'a have been covered and stored, and we look forward to a quick winter so we can get back in the water soon!
The Hui will still have various activities planned throughout the winter season. We will post them on the blog as they are planned.
Mahalo to ALL of you who supported the Hui this past season. We appreciate your support! With the anticipation of more interest in our 2011 season our Hui Board will be putting together a more regular paddling schedule with designated times for Kane, Wahine and 'Ohana paddling.

GREAT time at the lake last Friday!

We had a GREAT evening watching movies at the Great Salt Lake last Friday night. Aunty Becki's Seafood Chowder was sooo ono!
No paddle this weekend due to lack of available Hui Members.

Hui Movie and Potluck Friday Night


Aloha Everyone!
Just a reminder...we will be having a Hui Paoakalani Movie and Potluck this Friday night at the Hui Shack.
Potluck starts at 6 pm. Movie starts at dusk.
We will be watching a surfing movie... Riding Giants and/or The Ride.

Keiki Camp this Week


Hui Paoakalani will be at the lake helping with Keiki Camp this Saturday. Keiki camp will run Wednesday through Saturday July 14 through 17 and again July 28 through 31. For more information please call the Hawaiian Cultural Center at
801-56-ALOHA or e-mail the Hui and we will forward your name and information on to the Hawaiian Cultural Center's staff.
Those interested in the 2nd Session(July 28-31) should contact the Center ASAP as space is limited.
All Hui Paoakalani Members: We will be meeting at the Lake this Saturday 7:30 am(rig time). We will be helping with Keiki camp, and we WILL pot luck as usual. Assisting with Keiki camp will count towards service hours for the season.

Hui Paoakalani Goes Sailing! and No Paddling over the Holiday Weekend


















We had an AWESOME day at the lake this past Saturday. The guys put together a mast and used a windsurfer sail to get our wa'a sailing on the Great Salt Lake! It was quite a sight!!!
Watch out...they may be sailing to Antelope Island or beyond soon... oh...that is as they kick back and enjoy the sights while eating their Hui Shave Ice! :)

Hui Paoakalani would like to thank each and everyone of you who came out to support the 2nd Annual Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Great Salt Lake Waterfest. There were many smiles and a wonderful time was enjoyed by all who came out to the lake.
Hui Members, family and friends willingly gave many, many hours of man-power to help set-up, clean-up, prepare/sell poke and shave ice, rig canoes, and help our keiki and members of the public experience Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling on the Great Salt Lake.
Mahalo again to the following Hui Members who always willingly give of their time to help the Hui experience continued success: Ben, Kwan Ki, Shauna, Kumu Butch, Becki, Lama, Angie, Larry, Pat, Tyler, Gene, Mike, Uncle Al, Auntie Marcia, Darren, Tammy, and those family members and friends of our Hui Board Members who also helped out on Saturday.

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Water Fest this Saturday!

Aloha!
Hui Paoakalani Outrigger Canoe Club and the Hawaiian Cultural Center invite you to join us at the Great Salt Lake this Saturday June 19, 2010 from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Bring your family and friends!
Come paddle an Outrigger Canoe and learn more about the special relationship the Hawaiian people have with the ocean through participating in water sports activities.
Activities are FREE! There will be FREE snacks for your Keiki! While at the lake, be sure to stop inside the Hui Shack to pick up a Hui Paoakalani Shave Ice or Poke Rice Bowl. Hui t-shirts also will be available on Saturday.

Mahalo to everyone who came out to help and purchase Laualau's from the Hui this past weekend.

The Hui expresses our gratitude to the following: Au 'Ohana, Leong 'Ohana, Mata'ia 'Ohana, Medeiros 'Ohana, Porter 'Ohana, and Stroud 'Ohana for giving of their time and and helping with the prep. work and pick-up.

The Hui would also like to thank Ben, Butch, Becki, Darren, Kwan Ki, Mike, Tommy, and Tammy for helping out with an paddle fundraiser later that afternoon and evening.

Again, we appreciate the support of our core Hui Members and their families. We also appreciate those of you who supported the Hui by purchasing Laulau's, Poke, Poke bowls, and t-shirts! Your support will help the Hui offset costs for our Hui Shack repairs and the upcoming Duke Fest (on June 19th) as well as Keiki Camp (July 2010).

Just a reminder....Hui Paoakalani's Quarterly Laulau Fundraiser will be this Saturday,June 5, 2010.
Laulau pickup will be from 10 am to noon at the Hawaiian Cultural Center. A limited number of Laulau tickets are still available for purchase (1 for $5. or 5 for $20.) Please e-mail the Hui (hui_paoakalani@live.com) if interested.
The Hui will also have Kumu Butch and Auntie Becki's 'Ono Poke Bowls available for $5.00 each, as well as our 2010 Hui Paoakalani t-shirts.

Lucero 'Ohana needs your help and Paddle this weekend


Aloha Everyone,

The Hui will be helping load a moving van this coming Friday afternoon (5/28) at the Lucero's home beginning at 4:00 pm in preparation for their move to West Virginia. We are looking for a few more individuals to assist the Hui in this service. This should only take an hour or two of your time and these service hours will count towards your discounted 2010 membership fee's. Please bring your work gloves and any dollies you might have. Your KOKUA is greatly appreciated. If you need their address, please e-mail the Hui at hui_paoakalani@live.com.

We will plan on paddling this weekend (weather permitting) same time...same place. :)

Kanikapila this Friday and Paddling on Saturday




Just a reminder...
Kanikapila will be this Friday evening at the Hawaiian Cultural Center. The Hui will have a table set up and we will be selling Laulau tickets and our 2010 Hui T-shirts. Laulau tickets will be available for a purchase price of
1 for $5.00 or 5 for $20.00. The pick-up date for the Laulau is June 5th from 10 am to noon at the Hawaiian Cultural Center.
Our 2010 Hui T-shirt will also be available for purchase while supplies last. The cost for the t-shirts are $12.00 each. Sizes and colors vary, with sizes ranging from Adult small to XXL.
Hui Members are encouraged to wear a Hui t-shirt to Kanikapila. Please let Darren know if you can help sell Laulau tickets/t-shirts that night. (e-mail hui_paoakalani@live.com)

We will be paddling this Saturday, May 8th from 9 am to 1 pm. New Paddlers....Don't forget to bring your signed waiver form ( available on blog). The Hui will also have Hui t-shirts available for sale. There will be a Center clean-up this Tuesday, May 11th at the Hawaiian Cultural Center starting at 5 pm. Bring your gloves and outside gardening tools we will be cleaning inside and outside of the building. The Center clean-up will count towards your 2010 Hui membership service hours.

We will pot-luck at lunch, so bring something to share or you can always make a donation to our donation jar. As a reminder, be sure to pay the $2.00 Marina Entry Fee. This fee is collected by and paid to the State of Utah. Fee envelopes are available upon entry to the Marina. If you have questions...please let us know .

Lei Aloha 'Ohana Day Activity this Saturday


Aloha Hui,

We will be doing some service hours at the Hawaiian Cultural Center on Saturday to get ready for “Ohana Day” at the center. We will put up some tents and set up the center. We need to set up around 12 Noon because the activities start at 3:00 PM. If the time changes, we will let you know. The Hui will be making “Shave Ice” and we should all share the duties. All the service hours will go towards your 2010 membership requirements and help keep the membership dues low.

Our next Laulau Fundraiser is scheduled for early June. We will also have more 2010 Hui T-shirts available for purchase in April (hopefully at the April Kanikapila).

Laulau Pick-up This Saturday!

Just a reminder that the Laulau pick-up will be this Saturday, March 20th from 10 am to 1 pm at the Hawaiian Cultural Center.

2010 HUI MEMBERSHIP AND WAIVER FORMS NOW AVAILABLE

Aloha Hui Members!
The 2010 Hui Paoakalani Membership and Hui Waiver Forms are NOW available! Please click on the link located in the "HUI PAOAKALANI FORMS" section of the blog.
The Hui Board approved Discounting Membership Fees for 2010. This will be a substantial discount over our 2009 membership fees, and will include a MANDATORY 40 hours of service time. If you DO NOT participate in the service time (which can be done by helping to setup/cleanup the wa'a and equipment at weekly paddles, helping with wa'a maintenance, helping with Hui "Shack" maintenance, helping at fundraisers and/or other Hui related events, etc.) you will have to pay an additional $150.00.
Your Hui Membership will NOT include the USACK Individual Insurance that was provided last season. Individuals wishing to compete in various canoe races, will need to obtain this insurance on their own.
We are almost done painting the wa'a, and they will be ready to be put back into the water soon!
As a REMINDER-ALL Paddlers MUST complete and sign the Hui Paoakalani Waiver Form BEFORE paddling with Hui Paoakalani.
You may bring your Completed Membership Form, and your Completed and Signed Waiver Form along with your payment on your first day day of paddling this season.
HUI PAOAKALANI does offer a "First Paddle Free" for anyone who has NEVER paddled with our club.
NEW PADDLERS-Please REVIEW the NEW PADDLER INFORMATION FORM located on our blog.
We have a LauLau Fundraiser taking place on March 20, 2010. Pickup will be from 10 am to 1 pm on March 20th at the Hawaiian Cultural Center. Tickets have been selling well and are still available 1 for $5.00 or 5 for $20.00 from any Hui Board Member. We will need help the night before, as well as on the actual pickup day. Please e-mail hui_paoakalani@live.com to let us know if you can help on either day.

Those of us who Paddle and attend Kanikapila regularly are not at all surprised, and we were thrilled they won! WA'A REPAIR THIS SATURDAY


Happy New Year Everyone!

We hope everyone had a Safe and Happy New Year's Celebration! We will be doing some general maintenance on the Wa'a this Saturday. We are meeting in the Hawaiian Cultural Center parking lot at 9:45 am and then driving over to Ben's office at 502 W. 8360 S. in Midvale to work on the wa'a. Enter off of Sandy Parkway. If you get lost...Ben's mobile is 801.721.7026.

Please bring any sanding tools you may have. No experience required! This is a good opportunity to get up and close with our wa'a.
