For those of you who are interested...Here is the link to the world wide voyage update from Mark Ellis.  Mark is a crew member with Hokule'a and Hikianalia.  He is currently an apprectice navigator with Hikianalia. While in Utah this past August, Mark shared his knowledge of sailing and navigation with members of Hui Paoakalani and the Pacific Heritage Academy. Mark also helped Hui Paoakalani get our newly converted sailing wa'a back in the water.

LAULAU & POKE SALE UPDATE: SOLDOUT - PICKUP ON SATURDAY 18 OCT 2014

Hui Lau Lau & Poke Sale Extended - New Pick-up Date October 18th

Aloha Everyone,

The Hui will be extending its Lau Lau & Poke Sale fundraiser. Lau Lau and Poke will be available for pick-up on Saturday October 18th between 10 am till 12 noon (same location). Cut off date for all orders will be on Wednesday October 15th with any remaining lau lau's and poke available on a first come first serve basis on Saturday. For those who have pre-ordered already, we hope this extension will not inconvenience you? To place an order, please email the Hui at huipaoakalani@gmail.com 

This will be the last Lau Lau & Poke fundraiser till Spring 2015.  All funds earned help offset operating costs at the GSL Marina and to help maintain the wa’a. All donations are tax deductable. Coming up in Spring of 2015, the Hui will formally introduce Kai Lana Kaleo – our new OC6 Hawaiian sailing canoe to the community.  Mahalo for your continued support of Hui Paoakalani.

END OF 2014 OUTRIGGER CANOE PADDLING SEASON

To all those who have come out to the Great Salt Lake this past spring and summer and enjoyed paddling the outrigger canoes with our canoe club, we appreciate your involvement and friendship.  We have decided to end the general pubic paddling season for 2014 in order to focus our efforts on the maintenance of the canoes during the next few weeks.  Last season we had a late finish and could not properly prepare the outrigger canoes for winter.  The Hui will still be doing some selective paddling and training over the next month while we go over safety procedures and protocol.

This weekend, several Hui Paoakalani members will be meeting at the marina on Saturday morning to work on Kaleo.  If anyone is interested in assisting the Hui or learning how to care for the outrigger canoes, you can call Darren Medeiros for more information.  If you have any other questions, contact us via email.

SATURDAY TRAINING SESSION: AUGUST 30, 2014 - 12 Noon

The Hui had a late Friday night and therefore we will start today's training after 12 Noon.  We are having a potluck lunch to begin the training and will be at the marina till the evening (sometime around 6pm) weather permitting.  If you have any questions, call Ben at 801-721-7026.  If I don't answer or return your call within 20 minutes, we are probably still on the lake somewhere.

FRIDAY NIGHT WA'A CHAT & POT LUCK DINNER: AUGUST 29, 2014

Hui Paoakalani will host a Friday Night Wa'a Chat this weekend for all interested parties and the general public.  The Hui will be at the Great Salt Lake Marina on Friday to rig the Kailana Kaleo with her new sailing configuration (amas, iakos, mast, spar, boom and sail).  Later on Friday evening, we will have a Pot Luck dinner and will host Mr. Mark Ellis (Tammy Medeiros' Brother) who is a member of the Hokulea crew.  Mark will share his sailing knowledge and experiences with the Hokulea.  The Hokulea is currently on its Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage and is in Pago Pago, American Samoa where a new crew arrived on Monday, August 25, 2014 to prepare for the next leg of its worldwide voyage.

NO SATURDAY PADDLE: AUGUST 30, 2014

The Hui will not have a general public paddle for this coming weekend.  Instead, we will have a work and training day at the Great Salt Lake Marina as we prepare the Kaleo to enter the waters of the Great Salt Lake.  All Hui members and friends are welcome to assist on this project.  Also, we have tentatively scheduled Friday afternoon for loading and hauling Kailana Kaleo back to the GSL Marina.  Please check back on this blog on Thursday evening or Friday morning for confirmation.  If you have any questions, please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026.

SATURDAY PADDLE: AUGUST 23, 2014

The latest hourly forecasts for today show that the weather may clear up by 12 Noon and as the day progresses we will see some sunshine.  We will meet at the GSL Marina as scheduled and see how the day turns out.  Hope to have some fun today.

SATURDAY PADDLE: AUGUST 23, 2014 - 10 AM TO 2 PM

Aloha Hui and Friends,  The Hui will be paddling this coming Saturday morning, August 23, 2014 starting at 10 am.  The weather forecasts calls for scattered thunderstorms and chances of rain at 60% with winds at 8 mph and temperature at a high of 71 degrees.  We normally have a small window for paddling in the mornings, even with rain in the forecasts.  Please check the weather on Saturday morning and call if you have any questions.  Normally, the main deterrents to paddling are high winds and lightning.

We will have a pot luck luncheon during the lunch hour.

NO SATURDAY PADDLE: AUGUST 16, 2014

The Hui will NOT be paddling this weekend due to schedule conflicts and the effort being put forward to complete our sailing outrigger canoe.  We do plan to have 2 activities the weekend of August 22 and 23, 2014.  On Friday, August 22nd, we will be meeting at Darren's home in Centerville to rig Kaleo with all of the completed parts for sailing.  On Saturday, August 23rd, we are scheduled to paddle in the morning.  Please check this blog for further details regarding the weekend of August 22nd and 23rd.  If you have any questions, please call Darren or Ben.

SATURDAY MORNING PADDLE: AUGUST 9, 2014

The Hui will be paddling this coming Saturday, August 9, 2014 from 10 am to 2 pm.  We will have a potluck luncheon as usual so bring some of your favorite food and share with the Hui and guests.  We will also be working on the Kaleo's amas on Friday afternoon at Darren's home.  We are getting closer to finishing the amas and closer to bringing the Kaleo back to the Great Salt Lake marina.

SATURDAY - JULY 26, 2014: NO PADDLE

The Hui will be working on the Kailana Kaleo next Saturday, July 26, 2014.  For those who have been following the progress of converting the Kaleo from a strictly paddling outrigger canoe to a sailing and paddling outrigger canoe, we will be working on the Kaleo on Saturday from 7:00 am to sometime after lunch.  The Kaleo is currently in Centerville at Darren and Tammy Medeiros home and the Hui will meet there to do some fiberglass and resin work on the main ama and secondary ama in addition to putting some finishing touches to the hull.  We are looking forward to sailing Kaleo in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned and watch our blog for pictures and news on Kaleo.  To those of you who were wanting to paddle this coming week, we apologize for any inconveniences that we may have caused you, but promise that our paddling experience will be more exciting once Kaleo is back on the Great Salt Lake.  We are planning to have a pot luck after pau hana.

NO PADDLE TODAY: JULY 5, 2014

The Hui had a great time at the GSL Marina yesterday celebrating the Fourth of July.  Our Hawaii visitors, Neal and Kumu Kaleo visited us yesterday along with the Hanohano Ohana.  Plenty of barbecue and ono food resulted in us deciding that we needed a day of rest to recover.  Check the Hui blog next week to see the paddling schedule.

2014 FOURTH OF JULY PADDLE: FRIDAY AFTERNOON 4 PM TO SUNSET

Hui Paoakalani will have a Fourth of July Paddle this coming Friday afternoon starting at 4 PM and going until sunset or whenever you want to go watch fireworks.  We plan to have a barbecue so bring your favorite barbecue meat and side dishes.  The GSL Marina has a BBQ Grill to cook meat.  We will eat around 7:00 PM ish.  For those of you who can't make it on Friday, we will probably paddle again on Saturday so check back again on this blog to find out what time we will meet to paddle on Saturday.  If you have questions, call Ben Au at 801-721-7026 or contact us via e-mail.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON PADDLE - 2PM TO 6PM: JUNE 28, 2014

Our Saturday Afternoon Paddle was such a success this past weekend that we have decided to have another Saturday Afternoon Paddle for the second week in a row.  The weather and the lake conditions were great and the water was "glassy" and clear.  You could see the bottom of the lake and the brine shrimp swimming.  In fact, the water was so good that we jumped out of the wa'a to swim and float in the Great Salt Lake.  The water temperature is perfect this time of year so come on out and paddle with us in the wa'a and also take a swim in the lake.  The swimming is "no extra charge".

As usual, we will have a potluck dinner so come and eat dinner with us and stay to watch the sunset if you like.  

SATURDAY AFTERNOON PADDLE - 2PM to 6PM JUNE 21, 2014

The Hui will be paddling in the afternoon this Saturday because some of us are not available for our normal morning paddle.  Therefore, we will be paddling around 2:00 pm ish this Saturday.  We will have a pot luck barbecue after the paddle for dinner.  Hot dogs and Hamburgers are on the menu again.  Come and join us for some fun and sun.  If you have any questions, please email us or call Ben at 801-721-7026.

SATURDAY PADDLE & POTLUCK - JUNE 14, 2014

We are planning to paddle this coming Saturday at the normal time - 10 am to 2 pm.  We will also have a potluck luncheon sometime after 12 Noon.  The potluck theme is Sushi and Tempura fish, shrimp, veggies,etc.  We will have a wok and also the barbecue grill at the marina is available.  It will also be the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club's Annual Sail Fest.  Remember to pay the entrance fee to the GSL Marina.

Paddle this Saturday May 24th

We will be out at the GSL Marina this saturday starting around 10AM and we are hoping for good weather! As always, we will have a potluck to follow. Because Memorial Day is coming up,this week's potluck theme is the All American Barbecue featuring hamburgers and hotdogs. Auntie Becki will be making potato-mac salad, and Shauna will be making baked beans. Feel free to bring whatever you like. Hope to see you there!

No Paddle on Saturday - Bad Weather Forecasted

May 3rd - Wa'a Rigging at 10AM

To all those available to help, we will be rigging the wa'a and getting it into the water for the paddle season this Saturday. This may also include some rigorous scrubbing to get some of the oxidation off, so come prepared! Potluck to follow. Word on the street is that there will be tacos, guacamole, and more.
