Mahalo for making 2019 another successful paddling season for Hui Paoakalani! Mahalo and to all of you who have ventured out to the Great Salt Lake Marina to perpetuate our Hawaiian traditions and practices of our wa'a.  A BIG Mahalo to the Au's, Porter's, and Medeiros' for your unwavering weekly dedication to Hui Paoakalani - Utah's only Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Hui. The Hui would also like to "Mahalo" Dave Shear and the rest of the Great Salt Lake Marina Ohana for your continued support and friendship. The Hui looks forward to Spring 2020 and the re-launch of our Hawaiian Sailing Wa'a - Kai Lana Kaleo!

NO PADDLE - SATURDAY AUGUST 31, 2019 AND SEPTEMBER 7, 2019

We will NOT be paddling on the following Saturdays:

August 31st:  This is Labor Day weekend and several of our Hui Members will be out of town for business and family reasons.

September 7th:  The Kahuku Red Raiders Football team will be in Utah to play Timpview High School.  The game was officially moved from Friday, September 6th to Saturday, September 7th.  Kickoff should be at 7pm but you may want to verity that start time.

SATURDAY PADDLE - AUGUST 24, 2019

Aloha Hui & Friends,

We will be paddling this coming Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 10 am to 2 pm out at the GSL Marina. Please pay your $2 entrance fee at the gate. The weather is projected to be warm - 95 degrees so bring your sunscreen protection, sunglasses, and a water bottle.  Please bring a food item to share during our Hui pot luck luncheon. See you in the waa!

Gene Chun Habitat for Humanity Memorial Build!!

Hey SLC and Hui Paoakalani ‘Ohana!! Thank you all who have signed up so far to come and pound nails for the Gene Chun Habitat for Humanity Memorial Build!!

We still need alot more volunteers however so look at your schedules and invite your spouses, partners, and friends!!

SATURDAY PADDLE - AUG. 3, 2019

We will be paddling this coming Saturday from 10-2 pm out at the GSL Marina. Please pay your $2 entrance fee at the gate. The weather is forecasted to be warm - 98 degrees so bring your sunscreen protection, sunglasses, and a water bottle. For the Hui Potluck, we will be having Ahi Katsu & Shrimp - just like they serve out at the Kahuku Shrimp Shack! Broke da mouth! Please bring a food item to share if attending the pot luck. SATURDAY PADDLE - JULY 27, 2019

Aloha Hui Members and Friends,

We will paddle this Saturday, July 27, 2019 at 10 am to 2 pm.  Weather forecasts shows temperatures between 85 - 90 degrees, mostly sunny with south winds shifting to NW winds at 10 to 15 mphs.  Be prepared for a possible thunderstorm in the afternoon  During the past few weeks, we have seen the annual brine shrimp flies and spider invasion at the Great Salt Lake Marina.  Hopefully once we paddle out of the marina, we will be fine.

We will have our usual pot luck luncheon.  This week Becki is making tacos so bring something that goes along with tacos or bring your favorite dish to share with us.  If you have any questions, please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026.

No Paddle - Saturday July 13, 2019

Aloha Hui,

Due to excessive heat forecasted on Saturday at the marina, the Hui has decided to cancel our Saturday paddle. We will try again the following Saturday - weather permitting. Stay cool this weekend and drink plenty of liquids.  Mahalo.

NO PADDLE - JUNE 29, 2019

We will not be paddling on Saturday, June 29, 2019 because of family commitments and busy schedules this week.  We wish all of you a safe and Happy Independence Day - Fourth of July and if you are traveling to be with family for the holiday, drive safely!!  We will try again on July 6th so check our blog next week.

SATURDAY PADDLE - JUNE 22, 2019

Aloha Hui members and Friends,

We will be paddling this Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 10 AM till  2 PM at the Great Salt Lake Marina.  Weather forecasts show a high of about 65 degrees and partly cloudy skies with winds at 10 to 15 mph WNW.  This is a fairly cool day for mid June so dress accordingly and expect Utah weather to change this time of year. 

We will have a potluck luncheon as normal with a menu of barbecue pork sandwiches, potato mac salad and anything else you may want to bring.  We appreciate the support from all of you and hope that you can make it this weekend.  If you have any questions, please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026.

June 15 - No Paddle

Aloha Hui,

Due to a cold front hitting the Wasatch area later tonight, the Hui will not be paddling on Saturday June 8th out at the GSL Marina. We will try again next week.

SATURDAY PADDLE - JUNE 1, 2019

Aloha Hui Members & Friends,

Last Saturday we were able to rig and launch Na Wa'a (Outrigger Canoes) Hanohano and Duke Paoa Kahanmoku.  With both outrigger canoes in the water, we will be able to paddle with a little more fun and enjoy the company of more people on the water at the same time.  As you know, it is more fun to have some friendly competition when paddling against another canoe.  Also, we can accommodate more families and paddling with your ohana is always a great experience when we have keikis that are learning about their heritage.

Our Saturday Paddling sessions are from 10 am to 2 pm or whenever we get done.  We will have our traditional potluck luncheon as part of the paddling so please bring a potluck dish.  This week we are making some smoked Turkey to share so please bring whatever you feel like making or surprise us with one of your favorite dishes, salads or desserts.

Current weather forecasts for Saturday is partly cloudy to mostly cloudy with a high of 72 degrees and winds SW at 5 to 10 mph.  As usual for this time of year, the weather can be unpredictable so please visit our blog to check on the status of the paddle.  Please bring water or drinks to keep yourself and family hydrated and dress appropriately for water activities.  Don't forget sunscreen or other protective gear (hats, sunglasses, etc) and footgear (slippers or old shoes) appropriate for water use. Don't forget to pay the entrance fee (about $3 per vehicle) to enter the Great Salt Lake Marina State Park.

HUI PAOAKALANI 2019 PADDLING SEASON OPENS - SATURDAY MAY 25TH

Aloha Hui Paoakalani Paddlers,

The 2019 Paddling Season will begin this weekend, Saturday May 25,  2019 at the Great Salt Lake Marina at 10 AM.  We will be rigging and launching Na Wa'a (Outrigger Canoes) and preparing them for the paddling season.  This will be our initial paddle of hopefully a very fun and exciting paddling season.  Reports from the Great Salt Lake Marina show that the lake has risen from record lows and we anticipate a very good water year will allow us to have a very fruitful paddling season.

With the weather forecasts showing a window for us to launch the outrigger canoes, we felt like we should take the opportunity to rig the canoes and launch at least one canoe and hopefully with your help, launch a second canoe.  Our sailing canoe, Kailana Kaleo is still under going maintenance  and we do not anticipate launching her until later this summer.  We will be at the marina from 10 am till after 2 pm, weather permitting.

REMINDER: HUI PAOAKALANI LAULAU & POKE SALE - APRIL 27, 2019

Aloha Hui Members & Friends;

Just a quick reminder that we will be having our Laulau & Poke Sale this coming Saturday, April 27, 2019.  Hui members, we will be meeting at Larry & Pat Leong's Home in Bountiful on Friday to make and steam the laulaus.  Pick Up will be Saturday morning at the Pacific Heritage Academy in Rose Park, Salt Lake City.  For those wanting to pick up your orders in Utah County, please call Ben Au at 801-721-7026 to make arrangements.

Due to high demand, we are making approximately 400 laulaus and have sold 365 to date.  We are also making 40 pounds of Poke and have sold 34 pounds to date.  We will take orders until we sellout!!    If you have any questions or want to order, please email me at huipaoakalani@gmail.com or call / text message Ben Au at 801-721-7026.
