Aloha Gene Chun
Hui Paoakalani is saddened by the loss of one of our finest founding board members and dear friend Gene Chun.
Gene will always be remembered for the way he shared the Aloha spirit with anyone who came out to the Great Salt Lake marina.
Gene was a great paddler, and a dedicated member of our Hui. His service and kindness to each one of us and our Hawaiian community will be dearly missed but never forgotten. He took time to instruct our keiki and usually the last one to leave the lake when it was time to go home. Gene always made us laugh with his stories about his travels around the world. He also kept us well fed with our favorite donuts and Chow fun from Little World.
It has been a privilege to be touched by the life, friendship and service of this remarkable man!
“hut, hut, HO!” until we meet again!

Gene graduated from Damien High in Honolulu, but had many Kahuku Red Raider friends like me in the Hui. He also had a Hawaiian - Chinese background like me and enjoyed all local Hawaiian type foods, but we especially loved Chinese food. We compared our favorite Chinese dishes and shared with each other some of our favorite restaurants or dives. Little World was our favorite in Salt Lake City and Gene had the menu memorized. Our Hui met and ate there after docking and winterizing our outrigger canoes for the winter. That is the last time I saw him. What makes all of us Utah Hawaiians happy? Talking story about surfing, paddling wa'a, growing up in Hawaii, football, our favorite local kine foods and then eating our favorite foods. Gene is and was a "Good Man" and friend. I am sure he is having a "cold one" on the other side. Aloha Oe, my friend!!, Ben
